Sorry I'm Late

Well, this is awkward.

I missed my March 1 deadline for posting new content. I swear I have a good excuse: I was in Cabo San Lucas at an all-inclusive resort that didn’t include efficient Wi-Fi. Great drinks, no internet.

Now that I’m back home, I can stop and reflect on my trip.

There’s a lot here to unpack. My first trip to Mexico, and I saw an amazing desert landscape. It was kind of jarring, actually, to come from what is essentially a non-tropical rainforest climate in Washington to an Oceanside desert. And to see an Oceanside desert is a contradiction in and of itself. On the way up the highway, I couldn’t help but think about how easy it must be to hide a body there. Google Maps led us down unpaved dirt roads and winding side streets to our destination. And the resort was pretty damn awesome.

The resort had a very Old West feel to it as the buildings looked very much like every movie depicting the Alamo that I’ve ever seen. Except taller, I guess. And this Old West town was right by an expansive beach.

And several pools.

It was, of course, very relaxing.

What stood out to me was contrast. This resort was maybe five minutes from Downtown Cabo San Lucas, which had a very strange vibe to it. The bar scene was lively and vibrant, but devoid of locals. I came across far too many people from New York and Dallas, Winnipeg and Vancouver, considering I was in Mexico. The locals I did come across were friendly and I never, not even for a moment, felt unsafe but nights away from the resort were loud and energized.

In even more stark contrast was the actual town. The resort areas and the marina were well developed and still building, but once you got out of the core, you were in a labyrinth of dusty streets and dead ends. Chickens walked the roads with impunity, and I couldn’t figure out if they were pets or meals. I wouldn’t call it abject poverty, but considering I’m from the ‘hood, I know the ‘hood when I see it, no matter where I am.

I had these wonderful plans of going parasailing or jet skiing, of taking a glass-bottom boat or even trying to learn how to swim. However, the drinks at the resort were tasty and potent, thus I spent most mornings oversleeping. But hey, that’s vacation for you.

I still can’t get the desert out of my mind. And that means it will find its way into a story sooner or later.

Anyway, sorry I’m late.
